About UsARCANUM is a 12-part foundation course exploring traditional British Old Craft magic, aiming specifically at solitary practitioners, and providing a safe way to gain a solid grounding in practical Old Craft techniques. Most people learn about magic and witchcraft from books, and they learn alone. Their magic remains a very personal and private thing. This has one very major drawback, however ... where do you go to ask niggling questions, or check whether you are working safely and efficiently?
ARCANUM provides a broad-based introduction to basic Old Craft magical techniques that will prevent you from being deceived by those with lesser expertise than yourself. It is a non-initiatory course but the successful completion of the 12-months instruction may result in the invitation to join an established group. Any invitation will be made privately at the discretion of the tutors involved and should not be expected or automatically taken for granted, upon completion of the course. COVEN MEMBERS maintain regular contact with Julie Dexter and James Rigel, the Dame and Magister of the Coven, via private email, Zoom and personal meetings at pagan events in different parts of the country. DISCLAIMER: COVEN OF THE SCALES is not affiliated, associated or connected with any other group, organisation, or on-line site using a similar name, claiming consanguinity, or attempting to identify with any branch of the Esoteric Order of the Serpent (the Inner Order incorporating Coven of the Scales and Temple of Khem) in order to promote their own claims of personal, magical, political, homological, corporate or commercial fellowships. If there is any doubt as to the antecedents of anyone claiming affiliation with CoS then please contact us immediately for clarification. |
Who We Are |
"It should be understood that although Bob [Clay-Egerton] firmly held the philosophy and opinion that all faiths were One and all Paths led to the same Goal, he did not advocate what is now referred to as 'eclectic paganism'. What he did teach was the desire for knowledge and experience, regardless of source. Each new experience was, however, studied within the confines of that particular religion, path or tradition. Each new discipline was kept completely separate from each other. It was only when the student had a thorough understanding of the tenets of each discipline were they encouraged to formulate them into their own individual system." Our History |
Coven of the Scales is a British-based Old Craft coven founded by Bob and Meriem Clay-Egerton, that can trace its recorded lineage back to the mid-1800s from a Cheshire mining community near Alderley Edge. By the 1960s it had moved to the 'land of the covens' in rural Warwickshire before decamping to Newcastle Upon Tyne following the outbreak of a vicious anti-occult campaign in the area. After Bob's death and just prior to her own, Meriem handed the reins to Melusine Draco, who was Principal of the EoS and Coven of the Scales until her passing in January 2024. She appointed Old Crafters Julie Dexter as Dame and James Rigel as Magister of Coven of the Scales, and they are now Principals of EoS and CoS.
